Thrifting Finds

Ever go to a sale where the offerings are slim and you start to regret the time and gas spent to get there? THEN you find one great thing. Such was the case this past weekend at an estate sale. I was about to leave when I noticed a great side table in the corner. I paid $35 for it and took it home.

I like the style of this table -  the details on the drawers, the legs, the open space and iron bars on the side.  The brand name is Brandt. I've seen some of their more rustic furniture. Think I'll spray paint the knobs and feet covers black for now. Flanking the table are my Baker Chairs, a previous craigslist find.

I found two pieces of Dansk enamelware at another sale. The pitcher is a really pretty cobalt blue, which doesn't show in the picture. I think it will be great with fresh flowers in it. I paid $6 for it. The brown casserole has some wear on the enamel around the edges, but I was excited to find it so I bought it anyway, it was only $3.

The candleholders were $6 for the pair. They are heavy for their size and have great mid century style. The label says nagel, made in Germany. Anyone familiar with these? I feel like I've seen them before.

I bought this vase for $1.50, I like the style and finish. It says USA originals on the bottom with other markings. I've come across USA pottery countless times but the markings seem different.

Did you have any good finds this past weekend?

Thrift Share Monday

Hope you all had a good weekend.I didn't do a lot of thrifting, but I did get out for a little bit on Friday. Here are some of my thrift finds.

I found a nice mid century ice bucket (should have used a flash, color is washed out in pic) and a fondue pot. I like the style of the fondue pot and it's going in my collection.

Two birds - the first is a eagle or maybe hawk. It is carved out of a solid piece of wood. I'm going to give this to my dad for his birthday next month, as he likes eagles and collects them.  The smaller bird has nice detail and color and is going on my bookcase. (Colors are brighter than pic.)

I like this small mid century plate. I also found a lacquerware box with matching coasters. (To see my posting on lacquerware, click here.)

I was taken with the sculptural quality of this ceramic piece. Lol - when I got it home discovered it was for the microwave! Anyway, don't care, it's going in the living room.

So tired out today - I cleaned and cooked this weekend and baked a german chocolate cake from scratch. It really made me appreciate my mother and all that she did. But maybe next year we'll go out to eat, it's so much work. I see a nap in my future...

Thrift Find, Heller Plates

My new stash of Heller. I need to get more plates and balance out the colors. The coasters are not heller. I thought the planter went nicely with the Heller and have two other larger ones that are yellow too.

While hitting the thrift store pavement last week, I came across some nice sturdy Heller plastic plates. On the lookout for things to use on the deck, I purchased a whole stack in colors that I liked.

After getting home, I did a search on Heller and was pleased to find that they are collectible, (I would still like them even if they weren't) as this is always a bonus with thrifting.  As a newcomer to modern design, I wasn't familar with Heller, but am learning as I go.

Conceived by Italian designer, Massimo Vignelli, this melamine tableware is made to be stackable. (It won an award for good design in 1964.)  Originally produced in Italy, it was introduced later to the U.S. and produced by Heller who added more colors and Heller tableware became very popular. Apparently it is still in production and sold by Unicahome in white.

Here you can see some of the colors they were made in

Here is some cutlery made to go with

I like this color combination. You can also see some other pieces in the line.

Nice Ice Bucket

The yellow Heller pieces look really
nice on the gray table, nice and cheery!

I think these will be great for outdoor summer gatherings. I have added Heller to my list of things to look for.

Thrift Happy

I should have been cleaning. But when the urge to seek out unknown treasures for bargain prices calls, cleaning loses every time. No hesitation. Not even close. Oh well, life's too short anyway, right?

Every year I go to a sale in Mazomaine, Wisconsin, about 25 miles from my house. Held by a church, the prices are cheap and selection is great. I somehow missed the first day this year, which is the best day to go. So I went on the second day of the sale, and still brought home a couple boxfuls for about $22.00. (yess!) Here are some of my finds. Pardon the mess, I was too excited to get them out of the box to clear the table much. Oh, and that cleaning thing.

How great is this table top lamp? I PAID $1.00 FOR IT. (THIS IS WHY I THRIFT) Need to get some type of shades for it and find a spot for it.

I was taken with this signed photograph picture, the colors are really nice, photo was was taken in Italy. I really like the triple mat on it too. It was $10.00, but they saw me hesitating and knocked it down to $7.00. I Need to get a different frame for it, something with a little contrast.

This tea pot set was $2.00, so I couldn't pass it up. There aren't any markings and I don't know anything about it. Hopefully it all belongs together. I think the cups look like they could hold soft boiled eggs. If you have any info to part about this I would be appreciative.

Some obsessions as of late: egg shaped objects  and wood plates. I found the bigger wood plates at Savers. The person who made them put their name on the back and the type of wood they used. I got four, each a different type of wood. The small green wood plates are Japanese I think, anyone know what they're intended for?
