Upcycling Wood Crates

Looking for wood crate ideas? Look no further! Here are several ideas to upcycle wood crates.

Styling and Salvage

Rupert Blanchard has a very interesting site, recording all his projects and interests. I would say that he has an excellent sense of design and has come up with some great designs.

Hudson Goods

This is a very cool piece, it would make quite a statement in the right setting. The shape of it makes me think of the old fashioned wood baskets that apples for sale were in at the orchard I went to with my mother when I was a kid. I'll be those could be used to make a light fixture too.

Real Simple

Wood crates are great for storage and this idea doesn't require anything besides stacking.

Gore Dean

How neat is this idea? Love the burlap cushion. Metal trim was added to this crate, but if you want to try this at home, you could make it without. How about rope handles?

Vintage Finds

I had to include this console made from plastic crates. It takes a creative eye to do something this stylish with plastic crates!

Funky Junk Interiors

Donna from Funky Junk Interiors has the tools and the know how to create some pretty cool things. She shares it on her site.

Simply Savannah Events

Here's an idea that is simple, functional and looks great. The metal corner pieces (not sure what it's called) add a lot of stability. Think how different it could look if you had crates that had colored graphics on them with colored metal corner pieces plus bright casters! (I'm tempted to do that myself.) Plus a piece like this could be used in many different areas of the house or garage to organize different things.

The Style Handler

This idea to use a cheese crate as a planter is an oldie but a goodie. I like the way these succulents look in it.

REcreate

If you want to get your upcycling on, REcreate is the place to go. Owner Katie Thompson's innovative ideas and eclectic style = one of a kind items. Sadly for most of us, we won't be able to go to her store in Cape Town, Africa. But there are pictures of it on her site and she has an online store.

I was initially drawn to REcreate when I saw these suitcases chairs - what a cool idea. I am drawn to the black/green one. Here's another unique idea, an ottoman made from a galvanized tub.

This hatbox ottoman is super cute and has the bonus of storage

Here are some repurposed clocks designed by Katie.

These lamps are great and would fit in any contemporary, industrial or eclectic decor

More great repurposing ideas from Katie. I especially like the fryer basket. A grouping of the garden sieves above a desk would be nice.

Katie says that she loves creating functional art from discarded nonfunctional junk. She's definitely got the knack for it!

Recreate studio is in Salt River, Cape Town, South Africa

Upcycling Ideas

Upcycling is a term most of us are familar with. As I look at different ideas, I realize that this concept has been around for a long time. But I am struck by how creative and inventive people can be. Some are downright artistic. Here are several ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

I like the way these wine crate shelves look and they are very functional. These could work in different places, an office, laundry room, kids room, bathroom, family room, etc.

Ideas for wood pallets abound, but I think this bench is very nice. It has many placement possibilities.

Dresser Before

Dresser After

I doubt I'd be up to the task of refinishing a dresser like this, but oh, what a wow factor. Even more amazing is the transformation from ugly duckling to swan.

We've all seen neat things people have made with bottle caps, but this artwork is incredibly cool.

I really like this shoe form lamp, it would be great on a desk. How about a pair of them on a console table? I think I would try oversized clear light bulbs in them.

Can you believe that this great artwork came from junk mail?! It took the creative mind of artist Sandy Schimmel to figure this one out and she did so in a big way. Check out her website to see other gorgeous works of art made from junk mail.

Brass Razoo Boutique

I am amazed at all the creativity that comes out of thrifting and recycling. Not only in the people who buy, but also the people who sell. Such is the case with Elise Vaughn, owner and designer of Brass Razoo Boutique in Nampa, Idaho. With the concept of redesigning and recreating recycled items, items are fashioned into high quality pieces. The jewelry designed by Elise, is made using bits and pieces of vintage, antique and contemporary pendants, chains, links, stones and beads. Each piece is one of a kind. Elise also redesigns some of the clothing she sells. Home decor pieces are carefully selected and redesigned by Elise and Kirsten Grove.
